The volume and use of computers in the world are so great, they have become difficult to ignore anymore. Computers appear to us in so many ways that many times, we fail to see them as they actually are. People associated with a computer when they purchased their morning coffee at the vending machine. As they drove themselves to work, the traffic lights that so often hampered us are controlled by computers in an attempt to speed the journey. Accept it or not, the computer has invaded our life.
The origins and roots of computers started out as many other inventions and technologies have in the past. They evolved from a relatively simple idea or plan designed to help perform functions easier and quicker. The first basic type of computers were designed to do just that; compute!. They performed basic math functions such as multiplication and division and displayed the results in a variety of methods. Some computers displayed results in a binary representation of electronic lamps. Binary denotes using only ones and zeros thus, lit lamps represented ones and unlit lamps represented zeros. The irony of this is that people needed to perform another mathematical function to translate binary to decimal to make it readable to the user.
One of the first computers was called ENIAC. It was a huge, monstrous size nearly that of a standard railroad car. It contained electronic tubes, heavy gauge wiring, angle-iron, and knife switches just to name a few of the components. It has become difficult to believe that computers have evolved into suitcase sized micro-computers of the 1990’s.
Computers eventually evolved into less archaic looking devices near the end of the 1960’s. Their size had been reduced to that of a small automobile and they were processing segments of information at faster rates than older models. Most computers at this time were termed “mainframes” due to the fact that many computers were linked together to perform a given function. The primary user of these types of computers were military agencies and large corporations such as Bell, AT&T, General Electric, and Boeing. Organizations such as these had the funds to afford such technologies. However, operation of these computers required extensive intelligence and manpower resources. The average person could not have fathomed trying to operate and use these million dollar processors.
The United States was attributed the title of pioneering the computer. It was not until the early 1970’s that nations such as Japan and the United Kingdom started utilizing technology of their own for the development of the computer. This resulted in newer components and smaller sized computers. The use and operation of computers had developed into a form that people of average intelligence could handle and manipulate without to much ado. When the economies of other nations started to compete with the United States, the computer industry expanded at a great rate. Prices dropped dramatically and computers became more affordable to the average household.
Like the invention of the wheel, the computer is here to stay. The operation and use of computers in our present era of the 1990’s has become so easy and simple that perhaps we may have taken too much for granted. Almost everything of use in society requires some form of training or education. Many people say that the predecessor to the computer was the typewriter. The typewriter definitely required training and experience in order to operate it at a usable and efficient level. Children are being taught basic computer skills in the classroom in order to prepare them for the future evolution of the computer age.
The history of computers started out about 2000 years ago, at the birth of the abacus, a wooden rack holding two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. When these beads are moved around, according to programming rules memorized by the user, all regular arithmetic problems can be done. Another important invention around the same time was the Astrolabe, used for navigation.
Blaise Pascal is usually credited for building the first digital computer in 1642. It added numbers entered with dials and was made to help his father, a tax collector. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a computer that was built in 1694. It could add, and, after changing some things around, multiply. Leibnitz invented a special stopped gear mechanism for introducing the addend digits, and this is still being used.
The prototypes made by Pascal and Leibnitz were not used in many places, and considered weird until a little more than a century later, when Thomas of Colmar (A.K.A. Charles Xavier Thomas) created the first successful mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. A lot of improved desktop calculators by many inventors followed, so that by about 1890, the range of improvements included: Accumulation of partial results, storage and automatic reentry of past results (A memory function), and printing of the results. Each of these required manual installation. These improvements were mainly made for commercial users, and not for the needs of science.
While Thomas of Colmar was developing the desktop calculator, a series of very interesting developments in computers was started in Cambridge, England, by Charles Babbage (of which the computer store “Babbages” is named), a mathematics professor. In 1812, Babbage realized that many long calculations, especially those needed to make mathematical tables, were really a series of predictable actions that were constantly repeated. From this he suspected that it should be possible to do these automatically. He began to design an automatic mechanical calculating machine, which he called a difference engine. By 1822, he had a working model to demonstrate. Financial help from the British Government was attained and Babbage started fabrication of a difference engine in 1823. It was intended to be steam powered and fully automatic, including the printing of the resulting tables, and commanded by a fixed instruction program.
The difference engine, although having limited adaptability and applicability, was really a great advance. Babbage continued to work on it for the next 10 years, but in 1833 he lost interest because he thought he had a better idea; the construction of what would now be called a general purpose, fully program-controlled, automatic mechanical digital computer. Babbage called this idea an Analytical Engine. The ideas of this design showed a lot of foresight, although this couldn’t be appreciated until a full century later.
The plans for this engine required an identical decimal computer operating on numbers of 50 decimal digits (or words) and having a storage capacity (memory) of 1,000 such digits. The built-in operations were supposed to include everything that a modern general - purpose computer would need, even the all important Conditional Control Transfer Capability that would allow commands to be executed in any order, not just the order in which they were programmed.
As people can see, it took quite a large amount of intelligence and fortitude to come to the 1990’s style and use of computers. People have assumed that computers are a natural development in society and take them for granted. Just as people have learned to drive an automobile, it also takes skill and learning to utilize a computer.
Computers in society have become difficult to understand. Exactly what they consisted of and what actions they performed were highly dependent upon the type of computer. To say a person had a typical computer doesn’t necessarily narrow down just what the capabilities of that computer was. Computer styles and types covered so many different functions and actions, that it was difficult to name them all. The original computers of the 1940’s were easy to define their purpose when they were first invented. They primarily performed mathematical functions many times faster than any person could have calculated. However, the evolution of the computer had created many styles and types that were greatly dependent on a well defined purpose.
The computers of the 1990’s roughly fell into three groups consisting of mainframes, networking units, and personal computers. Mainframe computers were extremely large sized modules and had the capabilities of processing and storing massive amounts of data in the form of numbers and words. Mainframes were the first types of computers developed in the 1940’s. Users of these types of computers ranged from banking firms, large corporations and government agencies. They usually were very expensive in cost but designed to last at least five to ten years. They also required well educated and experienced manpower to be operated and maintained. Larry Wulforst, in his book Breakthrough to the Computer Age, describes the old mainframes of the 1940’s compared to those of the 1990’s by speculating, “…the contrast to the sound of the sputtering motor powering the first flights of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk and the roar of the mighty engines on a Cape Canaveral launching pad”. End of part one.

Although some brokers may allow you to invest as little as three dollars to execute a trade, this kind of investment is suitable only for an academic interest. These small trades allow the investors to get a feel of the online stock trading. They allow them to understand the level of freedom and flexibility that online stock trading offers.
Online stock trading, like any other business, requires a sizeable investment to become a viable source of income, more so, if you want to make it a full time source of your livelihood.
Like every other business, stock trading has its own pitfalls which may land unwary investors into trouble. Ignorance cannot be made an excuse for losses and failures.
An informed and careful planning can minimize the losses and maximize the gains. Some of the salient points that you must understand before opening an account with any brokerage firm are:
1. There are hordes of online brokerage firms that offer attractive terms to lure the customers. Some brokerage firms offer lowest trade commissions, but over- charge you on other counts such as inactive account maintenance fees. Still others may insist upon very high minimum deposits.
If a brokerage firm offers lower charges on almost every account activity, try to search out the reasons for this type of all round munificence. Either there may be some trap, or, the offer may have really genuine reason.
Some brokerage firms have lower overhead charges which they distribute to their customers. For example, most brokerage firms receive their market data on rent from the data vendors like Reuters or Bloomberg. They, naturally, transfer the costs to their clients in form of higher commission charges and so on.
There may be other brokerage firms which have some agreement with the market data vendors and save by not having to pay rent for market data. This leads to huge savings to them and they transfer these savings to their customers by charging less fees and commissions.
These inside secrets cannot be found out by cursory search. You have to devote some time and energy to thoroughly search the website of each brokerage firm before opening your account and parting with your vital financial data.
2. You may have to abide by the terms and conditions laid down by your broker as well as NYSE and AMEX market data display services. For this you are required to check the appropriate boxes at the end of each agreement. You must read these terms and conditions carefully before checking the boxes. They are not mere formalities. Ignoring to understand them may lead you into problem at a later stage.
3. If you find it difficult to do the entire search by yourself, you can hire some investment advisor. You can save a lot of expenditure over the long time by making one time payment to your investment advisor.
4. ISP services that run the online trade sometimes break down. These technological glitches cause lots of trouble at crucial moments, more especially, when you are trying to place an order. The delay in execution may cause you losses in form of increase in the price of the stock if you have placed a buy order, or, in form of decrease in price if you have placed a sell order. You suffer both ways due to delay in execution of your order. You must talk to your brokerage firm to make sure that they accept the telephone instructions to buy and sell the stock in the event of any collapse occurring in the functioning of the ISP services.
5. If you want to trade on multiple stock exchanges, says, like NYSE and NASDAQ, you must ensure that your online broker has the technical capabilities to meet your needs.
6. Trading in online stocks is always fraught with risks. Be prudent in your investments. Do a thorough research and invest in the stocks of the well-managed companies. Unless you are a day trader, hold the shares for some time and do not sell them in panic if, sometimes, the price of your stock falls suddenly. Price fluctuation is a normal feature of stock trading. In all probability the price of your stock will rise over the time.
7. Develop the habit of investing regularly irrespective of the occasional slumps in the stock market. The other alternative is to reinvest your dividends in reinvestment plans.

When a trader begins to trade, what normally happens is that the first few trades are usually successful ones. The new traders then becomes so confident of their supreme abilities in trading that their carefully crafted trading plan and money management rules are cast aside.
Suddenly their trades are not going so well anymore, they begin to lose more and more regularly. It almost seems that the market is ganging up on them to rip the carpet from under their feet! New traders being inexperienced tend to take it very personally and then sub consciously decide to punish the market. The position sizes become larger and larger, money management is totally forgotten, and their trading plan is in tatters now. Any piece of rumor or hearsay is taken to be the gospel truth and acted upon. When all these fail and they still lose money, they turn to “sources” that tout the holy frail of trading. That one plan that could make a trader a million in less than a year! (Come on by now wouldn’t you have woken up already?)
At that desperate situation, many traders choose to believe these sources and make some hefty purchases. They re fund their accounts and take their new trading plan to the market. History repeats itself, their first few trades makes them money then they being to lose again and again. Soon their account is wiped clean and it is about 6 months from when they first started on their path to forex trading.
Does the above story sound faintly familiar to you? It should because close to 95% of new traders that trade goes through this cycle.
Usually at this point in time I get a lot of applicants applying to join my classes and they clamor and complain that it’s the broker’s fault or that the trading plan was a rip off or that they were unlucky.
If you found the above example silly or even simplistic, then you are correct. But isn’t it surprising that 95% of the people who start off as traders give up after 6 months? Simplistic or silly as it may seem, this happens so often that it isn’t even funny anymore. In fact most new traders focus so much on easy and fast profits that they forget the real money making methods.
How then do you stop losing money in Forex and start making some profits? Forex is a business that works best with a defensive stance. If you keep running after the dollars you will only end up losing your whole account! To protect your account must be the first and most important action you as a trader take each time you trade.
There is nothing wrong with the trading plan you started out with or the plan that you bought online or off the shelves. There is noting wrong with the brokers or with the market for that matter. There is a lot of wrong in the way traders think! Discipline both mental and emotional, well planned profit objectives, total money management control. These are the elements that are sadly lacking in the education of many new traders. Prevent yourself from losing anymore money in Forex, plan your trades, trade your plan. Keep a tight rein on your money management, and never take an aggressive stance. This way you will stop the outflow of your money and increase the inflow of pips!

Easy Language
TradeStation gives you the power to right code in Easy Language in order to back test your trading strategies. Now, while the name of the code is Easy Language, it is far from easy. If you have previous coding experience, then Easy Language will remind you a lot of C++, but if you have no previous coding experience, do not waste your time on trying to learn the syntax. Simply look to their third-party programmers for assistance. These developers are backed by TradeStation and they do not charge and obscene amount of money. Better yet, if you have a friend or relative that knows how to write code, they will quickly be able to write basic strategies for you.
TradeStation provides some basic literature on Easy Language, but if you want to really get your feet wet, you will have to purchase their home study course, which will run you a cool $149. Again, if you are here to trade, trade, and leave the developing to the programmers.
Historical Market Data
TradeStation has over 25 years of historical data. When you look a little closer, the amount of data is dependent upon which investment vehicle you are using:
- 4 years of intra-day Forex data
- 8 years of Eurex Futures and Index Data
- 16 years of intra-day Equities
- 25 years on intra-day Futures data
So, the real question is do you need all this data from TradeStation. Well, of course, if you are serious about testing your trading strategies. This amount of market data will allow you to back test your strategies in bull, bear and flat markets. You will quickly see how you would have faired in the bull market of the late 90’s, or the slippery slope down in ‘01 and ‘02. Most importantly, you can see how you would have done since the market recently bottomed in the spring of ‘03.
Automated Trading
I do not endorse mechanical trading, as I feel every trader should be responsible for his or her own trading decisions, but I have to admit, having the option of setting up automatic trading is impressive. In order to activate this feature, you should be certain that your strategy is working properly and has clear stop rules. The last thing you want is to take lunch and come back to realize you just bought a 10 thousand dollar hotdog. TradeStation also has a new feature that allows you to execute orders based on fundamental analysis. TradeStation is the first platform capable of scanning and executing orders based on fundamental factors.
Back testing Strategies
There is one part of back testing that TradeStation does not tell you about and that is slippage. When you write your Easy Language code, you can tell the code to exit a trade on the close of the current bar, or ext at market on the open of the next bar. The problem is you may want to write the code to get out at a specific price. Now, all of you Easy Language experts out there, please relax, I know that you can write code to get out at any particular price, but the average trader will not know how to write such detailed code. So, in summary remember that if you write your own code, the canned functions in Easy Language will not allow you to easily code your exits. Just make sure you verify in your performance report that your results have not been inflated or deflated due to slippage.
TradeStation will display a report of your hypothetical trading results. The TradeStation performance report lists everything from average time in trade, average gain, total commission, annual rate of return to name a few. Only problem, you cannot export the data to excel. So, one is forced to manually type in stats into your friendly worksheet processor. Depending on how much information you want to analyze, this exercise could prove to be time consuming.
Trade Execution
TradeStation has the quick order button execution of every other active brokerage firm. But the cool thing with TradeStation is the Order Cancels Order (OCO) and Order Stages Order (OSO) order types. For Order Cancels Order, you can instruct TradeStation to enter a position if the price breaks up or down. This works well when you have identified two levels on a stock as potential long or short entries depending on how the price breaks. The Order Stage Order allows you to stage multiple orders for an existing position. So, if you are long MSFT and want to exit in 3 increments, you can create an OSO order which will stage the orders and when a certain price is hit, it will exit a part of your position at a specific limit. I often hear traders say that they do not want to put a stop in, because if there limit is hit, they will have to cancel their open stop order, to then put in a limit order to exit the trade. Well, with OSO in you can place both a stop and up to 3 limit orders in TradeStation, so there is no longer any excuse as to why you can not protect your capital, the second you get in the trade.
Shorting
TradeStation does not have the books to short some of the more obscure stocks. So, if you want to short stocks that are not well known, you may encounter some trouble with TradeStation. This does not happen often, but it happens enough that it is noticeable.
Charting
The charts in TradeStation are in real-time and there are over a hundred indicators, show me, paint bars, etc. which can be displayed on the chart. The only negative is that you cannot execute trades by clicking directly on the chart. There are multiple screens in TradeStation that will allow you to close a position; unfortunately, the chart is not one of them.
Ability to Link Accounts
TradeStation has the ability to link all of your accounts. Therefore, you can trade futures, one minute and then put on a trade in your equities account the next. This is extremely convenient, since you do not have to open another application or go through the tedious process of logging into another account.
Commission Structure
If you are an active trader and you trade under 1k shares per lot, TradeStation makes sense. TradeStation has a per share cost up to 500 shares. The first 500 shares are $.01. So you can buy 100 shares for a $1 and up to 500 shares for $5. Over 500 shares, it is $.006 per share. So, if you trade 3k shares, TradeStation can become costly. The first 500 shares will cost 5 bucks and then the last 2.5k shares will run you another 15 bucks. The total cost would be 20 dollars one-way for the trade. In this example, it of course would be much cheaper to trade with a brokerage firm that has a flat charge for all trades. In summary, if you are going to trade in big lots, 1k or more, go with a flat fee brokerage firm, but if you’re going to trade under 1k lots, TradeStation is the place for you.
Support Center
TradeStation has a support and discussions forums, where traders share ideas, stories and Easy Language code. Unlike many forums, where there are only a few users, the TradeStation forum has hundreds of quality posts. I have been able to pickup tons of ideas as well as free Easy Language code for some of my strategies. Each post is grouped in categories and the users are quick to respond to your questions. TradeStation has also recently started a Wiki for both their platform as well as Easy Language. The Wiki is expanded daily. TradeStation also has a dependable phone support staff. I have yet to call and not be able to get someone on the line with in 15 - 30 seconds. The staff is always attentive and willing to help on any issue. There is a sales desk, equities desk, futures desk, and forex desk. Each department specializes in their respective areas, which prevents you, the client, from ever talking to someone who is unknowledgeable on how to address your issue.
Radar Screen
TradeStation is the only trading platform, which has a radar screen that can scan the market based on your own market criteria. Now this is not your standard, scan that can display stocks with an RSI under 30. The scan in Radar Screen can be as simple or as complicated as your Easy Language abilities will permit. So, if you want to look at stocks at 2-day highs, with 25k shares per minute, that are up a minimum of 2%, you can scan the market for this information in real-time. The only negative regarding Radar Screen is TradeStation only allows you to scan the market for 1k stocks. But, who needs to monitor more than 1k stocks?

As more NC unclaimed money continues to be turned over to the state, than
returned to it’s rightful owners, the state’s missing money treasure chest has
swelled to a record $700 million! These unclaimed funds already belong to
regular people whose only obstacle is learning to properly search for and locate
all possible claims.
According to the North Carolina Department of the Treasurer, there are over
100 types of property that may become unclaimed after being dormant for 1-5
years (depending on the type of property). Of those 100 types, NC lists
“bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks,
bonds, and contents of safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned” as
some of the most common.
As with unclaimed property across the country, the biggest obstacle in
discovering North Carolina unclaimed money, is often the peoples’ searching
capabilities. For starters, very few people are even aware of these abandoned
funds (or they’d obviously have never forgotten them), and those that are
aware, simply haven’t been taught the proper way to search.
With nearly 1.5 million properties being held by the state, the chances of being
owed money are better than ever. Every Tar Heel out there should rush out
there and begin their search. But those who aren’t educated on finding
unclaimed assets could be in for a lot of frustration and wasted time, unless they
learn how NOT to search.
Most people seeking to reclaim their lost money think that if they can find a
website to input their name and click a “search” button, they’ve done all they
need to do. This couldn’t be further from the truth. For starters, not all
databases are legitimate, and those that are can only be considered as good as
who updates them.
Suppose a person searches their name on Friday, but a state employee hasn’t
actually added a record in that person’s name until Saturday. The search would
obviously be unsuccessful, even though the person was owed money.
Unclaimed money lists aren’t updated in real time, so searching frequently is one
of the best methods to implement if you would like to be confident in the results
of your search.
Out of date records aren’t always the fault of the state. If the asset simply
hasn’t been dormant long enough to be considered unclaimed, then it won’t
have been turned over to the state. Strict laws dictate how found money is
handled in each state, so you won’t issues like a bank turning over a bank
account after 6 months, simply because you hadn’t accessed it. So again, a
lack of a record doesn’t mean you aren’t due a claim, and you should check
again regularly.
As was mentioned, there are differing “dormancy periods” for each type of
property, which commonly range from 1-5 years. This means that after periods
of inactivity exceed those dormancy periods, the companies who hold these
properties are required to turn them over to the state if they are unable to find
the rightful owner on their own. At this point, the state will act as a custodian,
essentially a “holder” until you claim your money.
There are countless problems, in addition to the examples of search issues
mentioned above that often befall new searchers, which makes it all the more
important that the people of North Carolina allow an unclaimed money expert
to provide them with a step-by-step guide for navigating the lost assets maze.
Unclaimed money and property expert Russ Johnson has been assisting Americans in finding their unclaimed money online since 1997. His site is http://www.unclaimedmoney.net which is updated regularly and offers guaranteed official searches for North Carolina unclaimed money and missing money across the country.

I’m going to share with you a currency trading how to guide. This should help you become an overall better trader, which will result in better profits over the long term. This is a great business opportunity for individuals to make a second income from their own home.
- Have A Game Plan: The worst thing you can do is hop in front of your computer in the morning, turn it on and figure out what you’re going to do for the day. You need to have a game plan to be successful in this game. A game plan offers a few very important points. The first is that it gives you action tasks, instead of thinking tasks. You don’t have to think about what you’re going to do, you just do it. The second point is that you need to evaluate and calibrate your strategies. You just do something for one day and figure out if it is good or not. That’s why you need a game plan you can apply day after day, so you can eventually figure out what is good and what is bad.
- Play With Good Margins: When starting out it is instinctive to do small trades with small margins. The reason is simple: you risk less and you can learn more. That is perfectly fine and I support that, but the problem arises when you look at your bottom line. You’re going to end up with distorted picture of what your real trading capabilities are. Your broker takes a cut, so if you make a small profit, a significant portion of that will goto the broker. As well, if you make a loss, your brokers cut will be added onto it. That means your profits are smaller and your losses are bigger. You get the idea that you’re losing, when in reality you could be ahead if the margins were better. Be aware of that.
- Keep It Simple: You don’t have to over complicate everything. Yes, you’re working to make an income from home. No, it’s not rocket science. The more simple you keep things, the easy it is to follow and apply correctly.
I’m currently giving a 7 day free forex course. Newbies and experienced are all welcome. If you’re interested in participating, check out the Casual Forex Trader.

As a new forex broker your first challenge is to choose the right forex broker. It isn’t as easy as it sounds and the whole searching process might leave you breathless. Due to enormous competition between forex brokers, they offer different features, exciting capabilities and outstanding advantages. However, along with the exceptional features you might find a potential weakness.
The weakness I am talking about here is whether your forex broker is a regulated entity. Forex brokers can be naughty and you might find it difficult to withdraw your profits if your forex broker is not under some kind of authority supervision.
What are those regulatory authorities? Let’s list some of them here:
- National Futures Association (NFA)
- Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)
- Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)
- Swiss Federal Department of Finance (FDF)
- Escalade Incorporated (ESCA)
- Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF)
- International Financial Services Centre (IFSC)
- Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC)
- The Financial Futures Association of Japan (FFAJ)
- German Federal Labour Market Authority (BaFin)
The next question you probably want to ask is how these regulatory authorities keep forex brokers straight. Here is the simple explanation:
Your broker is responsible for your money, whether deposited or profited. A Regulated forex broker is under a watchful eye of the regulator authority. In case something goes wrong with deposit, withdrawal or even with the trading platform, you can complain, sue or file an appeal regarding your forex broker. The regulatory authorities protect forex traders against fraud, scam and illegal trading practices.
Regulated forex brokers get homework which needs to be submitted to the authority. This so-called homework is the financial reports. If a forex broker fails to submit his homework, there is no second chance here - he gets an “F” and the regulatory authority either request a fine or, even better, remove them from their membership list.
The Regulated forex broker will not hide the fact that he is regulated and who is the authority. You can easily spot it on the forex broker website - either on the home page or at “about us” section.
The authority of a regulated forex broker is located at the country where the broker is registered in. For example, forex brokers which are regulated by NFA and CFTC are brokers located in USA. While any regulated forex broker registed in Swiss is regulated by FDF.
To summarize, trading with regulated forex broker gives you a security and protection you need as a forex trader.
