Role of IT in the Democratization of Commerce

Monday, January 19th, 2009

The trend in globalization will lead to greater integration of large number of producers and consumers in the global economy according to M. K. Pralahad in his book ”Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid’. IT continues to played an important role enabling democratized commerce.

Because of technological advances; information is getting more and more democratized. Today, on a global scale everyone has access to the same information and the potential to translate that information into intelligence. In the past, the profit was made mainly from ‘Information Arbitrage’. If you had access to privileged information, you could take advantage of that information to make a profit. Also, since information traveled slowly, the first movers had a huge advantage when it came to competition. But, with the coming democratization, the velocity of information has dramatically increased and thus decreasing the period when the organization can market product based on differentiation strategy.

The competition will be able to catch up quickly and offer the same product or service, thus pressurizing the company to reduce cost. This intense pressure from competition leads to ‘commoditization of product/service’ which in turn leads to what Economist call ‘Perfect Competition’. Economists have always loved ‘Prefect Competition’ model because from their perspective that it increases economic efficiency which is good for the society at large.

Thus, trend towards commoditization has accelerated and will continue to accelerate due to technological innovation. This accelerated commoditization which is at the heart of Nicholas Carr’s argument in his infamous HBR article ‘IT Doesn’t Matter’ where he makes an argument that in a ‘perfect competition’ model of future, your investment in IT cannot be leveraged for differentiation strategy.

So, can IT be used for differentiation strategy? The answer is unequivocally YES. First of all, there is always a lag in the availability of information. Even though, the technology continues to enable sharp increase in the velocity of information, the information cannot be made available instantaneously. A ‘business idea’ in an organization will not be known instantaneously to the competition. There is that lag time. But with the increased velocity of information, slow decision will be punished. Organizations need to set up agile business processes and streamline decision making ability if they want to take advantage of first mover strategy. IT can play a major role in this effort only if the core competencies of the organizations are identified and automated.

While the technology can be blamed for commoditizing of products faster, same technology can be leveraged to expedite creation of Network Externalities. Let’s take eBay as an example. While it is simple to copy eBay’s business model, it will be extremely difficult to create a value for the sellers because all the buyers have become eBay’s captive audience. So, in this example IT that enabled Network Externalities has created differentiation strategy for eBay.

IT can also enable seller identify the Long Tail aspect of the supply demand curve. Lets say the Company X is involved in selling music video downloads an specializes in ‘Fusion French Rap with Middle Eastern instruments with Hawaiian Hula dance’. Before large scale global IT adoption, it would have been difficult to identify the demand for that kind of specialized music video. Now, with the advances in IT infrastructure, the company X can reach the global customer base and find enough demand to be profitable. With the advent of social media, technology can be used to build community around that specialized product thus adding more ‘value’.

Thus, IT acts as a double edged sword. On one hand it has the power to force rapid commoditization of products. On the other hand IT can be leveraged as mentioned above to differentiate products and services for an organization. Even with democratized information availability, IT can help create first mover’s advantage. It all depends on how organizations use IT.

He strongly believes that IT can be used to ‘expand economic moat’ for the corporations but one need to make sure that the IT projects are always used to enable corporate and business strategy. Day Trading - 3 Points That Show Why Technical Analysis Does Work

Friday, January 16th, 2009

It is so easy to become completely bogged down trying to keep up with the company news updates, you know, the feeds you get on the financial news channels. This causes you to get frustrated and often confused. There’s a lot of very interesting information, but does it serve to help our trading decisions? Remember, no two people have the same perspective on anything, and that includes the stock market. The analysts you watch and listen might well have very good and valid reasons for talking a stock up or down, depending upon their own investment criteria.

Here are 3 reasons to help you see why technical analysis works:

1. Every day trading decision, and I mean every one of them, without exception, ends up in one and only one result; price. The price of the stock at close of trading is where the whole picture finishes. You can do anything you like with company data; analyse it, pull it apart, listen to speculators, traders, journalists, but the result a closing is always the same.

2. It is correct that history does not necessarily reflect the future, and that’s quite right, no one would argue the case. But, and it’s a big but, it has been proven time over, that human psyche does repeat itself, the brain functions the in the same manner all the time. What you see on technical day trading charts is the result of past thinking, of past psyche. It will be argued until the end of time that you cannot trade for the future, based on historical data. But the technical data that is delivered and shown by these charts does lend itself to narrowing the odds enormously in our favour, IF used correctly. There are too many successful technical traders to suggest otherwise.

3. To see an excellent example, watch the price of a stock that’s moving in a trend, or range, and you can see that same patterns, by and large being repeated, day in, day out. All of a sudden, the price pushes beyond the upper and lower price boundaries that it’s held for the past few days or weeks, and you have a potential buy or sell trading opportunity.

There are traders who use only fundamentals, and still argue against technical trading, but if you have the time, a blend of both is best. The advantage of using chart set ups is that you can better gauge, and fine tune, where you are going to place you entry and exit positions.

Forex Currency Pairs - How to Choose Which Currency Pairs to Trade Forex On?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Forex Trading involves buying one currency in a currency pair, by selling the other. So if one is trading in EUR/USD, the trade may involve buying EUR by selling USD at the current market rate or vice-versa. Similarly buying EUR in EUR/GBP would require GBP to be sold.

Unlike options or stocks which have lots of companies that can be traded on, the forex market has got limited currency combinations which can be used to place the trades.

Despite this, often people wonder which currency pairs should be chosen for trading? Should it be USD based or should it be the one that is heavily volatile or should it be some other?

Lets look at few parameters which can be used to decide -

1. What is the pip spread involved - The biggest factor to be considered is the spread between the currencies. In layman’s terms, Spread is a difference between the sell price and the ask price of forex currency pairs as given by the forex broker. In other words, it is a commission of the broker or agent through which the trades are made. The lower the spread, the better it is for the forex trader. The lowest spread I have seen is in EUR/USD, which has the average spread is 2 pips to 3 pips. Typically a spread of upto 5-6 pips is good enough to trade.

2. What is the liquidity? - The more the liquidity, that means the higher is the amount of money being traded on that currency pair. So, this eventually means that that particular currency pair moves a lot in a the trading sessions. Its better to trade on such from a day trading perspective as the trades don’t need to be kept open for a longer time. I have seen that the GBP/USD is heavily liquidated. On average it moves about 100-150 pips everyday. This is followed by EUR/USD and USD/CHF.

3. How does the currency pair behaves? - Does it move technically or is it primarily fundamental driven? The one that is primarily fundamental driven doesn’t has much regard for technical analysis. I have seen JPY (Yen) as one such currency which is heavily fundamental analysis driven.

So, these are the some factors that can be used in identifying the currency pairs to be traded on. Though these factors are not an exhaustive list, they can be used as minimum basic rules. The pip spread is one important criteria. The lower, the better it is. However the currency pair should also be sufficiently liquidated as this means that there will be significant pips movement during a trading day.

Real Time Currency Trading Systems - Your Tools to Make Millions in Forex Trading

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Foreign exchange envelops currency trading in the sense that making a profit with this kind of investment works through buying a nation’s currency while selling other currencies when a small increase/decrease in exchange rate happens.

It involves a certain amount of risk because it does not tolerate ignorant brokers who are not familiar or have little experience with real time currency trading systems. These trading systems are all about investments that favor increased analysis and accuracy.

Which is a ironic since many markets want to share their trades without examining their market policies prior to deals. This becomes very difficult and puts the market at stake. Hence, it is best to learn your currency trading systems.

Through currency trading, brokers widen their perspective in making investments because these systems often expose increased speculations on brokerage. This aids in gaining knowledge about budding investors and understand the intricacies of the market.

Furthermore, real time currency trading systems help predict the future of stocks, which are one of the most important aspects of forex trade. Why are stocks significant? These stocks greatly affect the profitability in terms of currency trading.

Because the Internet provides readily available information concerning market trade, many websites offer courses to beginners that would aid in learning currency trade. Courses about currency trade will provide basic terms and language utilized in forex market plus understanding of market basic principles.

After learning the basic terms, the broker can now open an account with the help of an expert broker. This market, which is open for 24 hours online, would help in attaining forex reserves and share market benefits.

Learning currency-trading systems is important in Foreign exchange, as it embodies high profits and good investments.

Mexico City - Global Water Crisis and Assessing Non-Revenue Water Challenges (Case Study)

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Water infrastructure must be approved in the largest urban cities in the World, and yet, no one knows where all the money is coming from. Each year the demand gets bigger and the supply gets closer to crisis. Worse in many of the largest urban areas, the governments are losing revenues needed to improve those infrastructures.

Over 40% of the water is lost in Mexico City due to poor infrastructure, unauthorized hook ups and theft. Additionally, undeclared wells are a huge challenge. In Mexico City there are 660 declared wells and perhaps five times that many non-declared. Mexico City is sinking due to the ground water being pumped out faster than it recharges by a factor of 2:1, meanwhile the soil consists of clay and is a dangerous situation during drastic changes in hydrology.

To make it worse, millions of people living in slums without water and many that live on the far side of town where any water coming through is highly polluted. Mexico City is said to have some 20-million inhabitants, but the real number could be as high as 25-million now. The officials have no idea what to do if there is an earthquake, the water system will be severely crippled, perhaps beyond repair, as if it is in a state of repair anyway.

Many of Mexico City’s rivers and streams double as wastewater removal canals, it is quite disgusting and very dangerous for human Health for those who live downstream. It also challenges the quality of the underground aquifers and ground water, and without that or even with that, Mexico City is sunk.

There appears to be deep water aquifers at more than 300-yard below the surface, but it costs a lot to make wells that deep and takes a bit of energy to run the pumps, making such options economically non-viable. Other potential water sources to fill the gaps would require bring water over the mountains into Mexico City which sits in a valley, which was once a lake. And folks this is just one major urban area in the World at a pivotal point, and on the verge of complete chaos.

5 Guidelines For Evaluating Your Trading As A Business

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Trading is just as much of a business as any other industry. Treating what you do as a business will help you improve your trading, allowing you to trade with less emotion. Constantly set trading goals to work towards, just as you would create goals for any business. Here are a few tips to improve your trading as a business, helping you reach your trading goals.

1. Your Trading Plan is Your Business Plan - Your complete trading plan is much like a business plan. Included in your trading plan planner should be a concrete statement on how to generate profits and your specific strategies. Much like your own business, you should have a plan in place to reach your trading goals. Setting swing or day trading goals is critical to producing consistent profits and staying “in business.”

2. Profit Loss Sheets - Bookkeeping may come second to technical analysis and e-mini futures, but it is just as important as day and swing trading itself. You should prepare a profit or loss statement every month and track where you’ve made money and lost money. If you’re finding yourself losing money in the 10 am - 2 pm period of the trading day, you might consider closing up shop during that time.

3. Have a Routine - If you were going to the office every day, you wouldn’t go in sweatpants and a t-shirt. You should be dressing the way you want to perform. Getting up early and getting ready just like you would for any other occupation will keep your mind in the game and bring in consistent earnings. You need to treat yourself the same as you would with a business. Set a trading goal for each day and strive to reach it with profitable trading strategies.

4. Use Profits to Grow - Businesses need more capital to expand and make more money and so does your portfolio. Spending a few extra dollars on advanced trading techniques, tools, and strategies will help you be a better trader. Mark each expenditure against the value of your trading portfolio as you would against the bank account of your business. Each investment is an investment in yourself, and it is also tax-deductible, just like any other business expense.

5. You’re Buying and Selling a Product - Shares of stocks are products just like an article of clothing or a pound of carrots. Trading is buying and selling a stock for a profit, much like owning a business is buying and selling a product for a profit. Think of each stock like a product; you might have to have “sales” to get rid of extra holdings or to cut losses, but it is all a part of running a business.

Organizing your trading life like your business increases your probability of market success. When you take time to manage your business, invest in your business, and treat yourself professionally, these are the tools to make consistent profits.

Lower Actor and Actress Pay Immediately to Help Lower Movie Goer Costs

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Most Actors and Actresses believe that the average person needs lower prices for fuel and food. Yet, when it comes to watching their Movies, then the movie stars believe that high-prices are preferable. This is the ultimate hypocrisy, but it is quite common amongst liberal socialists.

Not an hour goes by in any coffee shop in Hollywood were someone does not say that they hate Bush and this is followed by blaming him for everything from climate shifts to continental drift. It’s amazing that the Actors and Actresses blame President Bush for high oil prices but refuse to blame themselves for high movie prices as they go on strike.

We are striking, we refuse to perform unless you pay us more money!”

When the actor’s union goes on strike for higher pay this indeed, costs all of us citizens more money for entertainment, while they buy expensive real estate, cars, jewelry and blow 10s of thousands on expensive fine dining and clothing. Don’t you find it interesting that the actors and actresses seem to be pushing for socialism or even communism and yet, are the first ones to demand more money in our capitalist system?

What about the movie goers, or the families who are stretched thin to make ends meet? What about the people? Apparently, when it comes right down to it, the only people that the movie stars are concerned about is themselves - well, that’s just convenient and so typical of Hollywood. In my view this is hypocrisy at it is worst and you can see it in full view on the silver screen any day of the week.

Forex Robot Trading Platform Programs - Which One to Choose?

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

If you are looking to buy a forex robot trading platform it can be very difficult to establish which ones which ones are best. There are so many on the market that it is very difficult to tell at first the differences between them, let alone which ones work and which ones do not. In this article I will share with you my experiences and also tell you which forex robot I use as well as how much money it makes me.

About 12 months ago I was looking to diversify my investment portfolio as I saw that the US credit markets were about to go into crisis and cause negative effects on the equity markets. I chose to invest in the forex markets for the following reasons:

  • Forex markets are not correlated to equity stock markets meaning if equities go down, the forex markets do not follow suit.
  • It is incredibly cheap to trade forex because there is no commission on trades that you execute.
  • Forex markets do not have downward trends. This is due to the two way nature of currency trades. When you buy one currency you sell another meaning that as one currency appreciates in value, by default another will fall in value. This means that no matter what the economic climate there are always opportunities to make money in the forex markets.

After taking the plunge to start trading forex I followed the advice of a friend and bought the same forex robot trading platform that he uses. The main thing that attracted me to this particular product was the full no questions asked money back guarantee that it came with.

Being ever cautious I started executing very small trades to see how I would get on. It wasn’t long before I was making money and increasing the size of my trades. What I like best is that if I want I can set the trading program to actually execute trades when I am not there. A few times I have actually made money while I’ve been asleep.

To put it into perspective it is my belief that using any forex trading program is not an easy way to make a million overnight. However they are very powerful tools that should be used to compliment your trading and add an element of automation into your forex trading strategy.

Follow this to to see which forex trading robot I use.

Disadvantages of Day Trading

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

While day trading offers a lucrative opportunity, it still has some inherent disadvantages that are hard to get over for many people. Here are some of them:

Loss of money

The trade is very lucrative but is also very dangerous. Many traders walk out at the end of the day with a depleted account which would not even pass as a paycheck. Depending on the decisions one makes during trading, a person could lose several hundreds to thousands of dollars

Improper money management

Because this trade revolves around money, and the money invested here could be lost at any time of the day, a trader then faces the risk of spending the money he could not afford to lose. He might find the need to borrow money from lenders or use his money intended for bills as funds for trading.

Demanding Job

Day trading is not a laid-back type of job. You have to dedicate a certain time of your day to it with full focus depending on the income you want to achieve. Also, it is a highly stressful job which demands you always make make-or-break decisions while being time pressured. For people who find it hard to focus for lengthy period, they may find this trade a bit frustrating especially when very little is actually happening.

Huge stressors

Being a trader requires you to endure huge daily stressors, not only on the perspective of possible money losses, but also because the job will require you to give all your focus on what’s happening in the markets that could affect your trades. You will also have to constantly watch the fluctuations in the prices and the market plus the indicators that will help you decide where to put your next trade.

Overnight Gaps

Trading ends as the day closes so any market activities overnight won’t affect you in anyway- even if sometimes it could be advantageous on your part.

A moving market is not a guarantee

Sometimes, the market is so active but you’ll end up with a loss or a breakeven. This could be attributed to wrong decisions on what shares to buy or to sell or wrong timing in entering the trade.

Overtrading

Overtrading - is defined as either taking too many opportunities or trading too large shares - is very prevalent in day trading. Amateurs and emotional trades find it hard not to overtrade which puts them at a lot more risks than necessary.
